DERBY, Conn. – Gilder Boathouse was standing-room only on Saturday as the Yale lightweights hosted Dartmouth in picture-perfect conditions: mirror-flat Housatonic water and a light headwind that built steadily throughout the morning. The Bulldogs delivered wins in the second and third varsity events, but by racing's end it was the Dartmouth Big Green who claimed the Durand Cup for their victory in the varsity eight.
- The morning began with the 8:30 a.m. second varsity eight contest. Yale's 2V blasted off the start and remained even with Dartmouth through the first 500 meters, with the Big Green on the outside lane. By the second 500, however, the Bulldogs had settled into a powerful base rhythm, rowing hard through the turn to grab a half-length lead at 750 meters. From there, Yale kept taking seats, extending their margin at the halfway point to nearly a length. The Bulldogs brought it home with a straight-shot sprint on familiar waters, stretching their lead to open water with a ferocious move in the last 500 meters and reaching the finish line first in a commanding victory.
- The varsity eights followed their JV peers with their own duel at 8:50 a.m. Off the line, the Yale eight matched Dartmouth stroke for stroke, with both crews firing off at a high stroke rate. Approaching the turn, the Bulldogs began to move on Dartmouth, grabbing a few seats on the Big Green. Through the halfway point, though, Dartmouth kept up a hot pace, nullifying any gains the Bulldogs had hoped to make on the inside of the turn. From this point, the Dartmouth crew gradually walked away from the Bulldogs, opening up an open water advantage that was cemented with a strong sprint through the line.
- With each team claiming one victory apiece by this point, all eyes at Gilder turned toward the start line as the third varsity eights locked into their stake boats at 9:10 a.m. But moments after the flag dropped and the crews set off, the Yale oarsmen put foot to pedal, blitzing through the stagger and pulling level with Dartmouth. From there, the Bulldogs settled into a strong cadence that quickly earned them an open-water lead on the Dartmouth shell leading into the river bend. Coming out of the turn and facing a straightaway on their home waters, the Bulldogs left little on the table, upping their stroke rate and slicing through the water despite the mounting headwind. Through the final few dozen strokes, the Yale shell expanded its lead to a few lengths of open water before crossing the line to the roar of onlookers.
"We're very happy with today's racing, but there's always more to work on, and the season is still far from over. We can't wait to get back to work at Gilder tomorrow," said
Alexander Judelson, six-seat of the third varsity eight.
For their victory in the varsity eight, the Dartmouth lightweights claimed the Durand Cup, named after former Yale lightweight oarsman Loyal Durand III and introduced in 1955. Last year, Dartmouth claimed the cup for the first time since 2012.
The Bulldogs will hit the road next week as they take on historic rivals Harvard and Princeton at the 103rd HYP Regatta in Princeton, N.J. The Y150 will seek to defend the Vogel Cup for team points and reclaim the Goldthwait Cup in the varsity eight event.
