Y150 Defends Bulldog Cup, Takes Joy Cup Against Georgetown, MIT

PRINCETON, N.J. – Overcast skies, flat water and a light tail breeze set the stage on Lake Carnegie as Yale's lightweight crew capped off a successful weekend of racing. The Bulldogs came away with two more cup victories against Georgetown and MIT on Sunday—securing both the Bulldog Cup and the Joy Cup—bringing their total to four cups and preserving an undefeated record for the weekend.

  • The morning began at 10:10 a.m. with the third varsity four taking on MIT, Georgetown 'A,' and Georgetown 'B.' Yale and Georgetown 'B' seized control early, earning nearly a length on the field within the first 200 meters. The two boats remained level through the opening 500, but by the second 500 the Bulldogs had begun to separate. In the third 500, Yale established a full length's lead and stretched it to open water in the final segment, maintaining that advantage across the finish line.

  • Next up at 10:20 a.m. was the second varsity eight's contest against Georgetown and MIT. All three crews blasted off the line, remaining close through the first 250 meters. As the field approached the 500-meter mark, Georgetown and Yale edged out to a narrow lead over MIT. Georgetown initially gained a few seats on Yale, but the Bulldogs responded with a strong push during the second 500, drawing even and then surging ahead. Although Georgetown kept contact into the final 500, Yale held firm and crossed the line first, bow to stern.

  • In the final race at 10:30 a.m., all eyes were on Yale as the Bulldogs sought to defend the Bulldog Cup against Georgetown and also vie for the Joy Cup against MIT. Off the line, MIT powered ahead to claim an early lead, while Georgetown grabbed a few seats on the Bulldogs. By the 500-meter mark, Yale had settled into base pace and pulled level with Georgetown, then began chipping away at MIT's lead. Approaching the 1,000-meter mark, Yale drew even with MIT, then charged through them, opening up a half-length lead going into the third 500. From there, the Bulldogs kept pressing, claiming a full length's advantage heading into the final sprint. In the last few dozen strokes, Yale expanded the gap to open water, securing both the Bulldog and Joy Cups. This marks the second year in a row Yale has won the Bulldog Cup in its two year history.

"We've worked incredibly hard all winter and were really looking forward to kicking off the spring season this weekend. I'm proud of the team's grit and composure through tough racing all weekend. We're thrilled to bring four trophies back to Gilder, but the work doesn't stop here," said captain Dylan Oberst.

The Y150 will next hit the road on Apr. 12 to compete for the Dodge and Colgan Cups against Penn and Columbia in Philadelphia.
