Bulldogs Compete at River Hawk; Grd Breaks Yale's 60m Hurdles Record

Lucija Grd (shown here) broke her own school record.
BOSTON – The Yale women's track and field team competed in Boston at the River Hawk Invitational on Saturday. The meet featured many standout performances in the sprint and middle-distance events, including one new school record in the 60m hurdles.

The Bulldogs:
  • Sophomore Lucija Grd won the 60m hurdles, crossing the line in a time of 8.55 seconds. In doing so, she broke her previous Yale record by one-hundredth of a second, setting the tone for an impressive season.
  • Captain and senior Dominique Romain was Yale's top finisher in the long jump with a mark of 5.55m, a distance of just over 18 feet. Romain also dipped below 25 seconds in the 200m for the first time, walking away with a new personal record of 24.92.
  • Sophomores Gloria Guerrier and Victoria Guerrier took the top two spots in the 400m. The twins ran the two laps around the track in 55.52 and 55.80 seconds respectively.
  • The 500m featured juniors Carmel Fitzgibbon and Molly Harding. Fitzgibbon, who finished second overall, won her heat in a time of 1:14.80. Harding was less than a second behind her and fourth overall in 1:15.48.
  • Senior Iris Bergman made her return to the 800m with a second-place finish and shiny new personal record of 2:09.29.
  • In the 1k, junior Linde Fonville finished second overall with a time of 2:50.88, just a second off her personal record. Junior Anna Chamberlin had a breakthrough race, crossing the finish line in 2:54.82. Her previous personal record was 3:10.43.
  • Sophomore Hebe Chadwick made a statement by finishing third overall in the mile. Her time of 4:50.22 was her fastest so far this season. Other athletes of note in the mile were first year Muriel Lovshin, who represented Yale for the first time, and junior Marina Carlos, who set a personal record by 10 seconds.

Up Next:
  • Next week, the Bulldogs will split up for the first time this indoor season. Some athletes will head up to Boston for the John Thomas Terrier Classic on Jan. 31, while others will compete at the Coach Greg Roy-al Rumble in Storrs, Conn. on Feb. 1.
