NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale women's lacrosse team's talented first-year class has been on display early in the season. In the season-opening win vs. La Salle last Saturday, first-year midfielder
Ana Dieroff racked up eight points. And in the second game of the season, Saturday vs. Albany, first-year midfielder
Bri Carrasquillo delivered nine draw controls and four goals. That was enough to keep the Bulldogs within striking distance of the Great Danes, as the game was tied 9-9 with 10:42 to play. But Albany tallied three goals after that to come away with a 12-9 win.
"It was a tale of two halves," said
Erica Bamford, Yale's Joel E. Smilow, Class of 1954 Head Coach of Women's Lacrosse. "We competed hard for 60 minutes, but were hurt by our mistakes in the second half."
Yale (1-1, 0-0 Ivy League) jumped out to an 8-4 lead at halftime, as Carrasquillo scored four goals in a span of 11:21 near the end. But Albany (1-1, 0-0 America East) roared back with three straight goals to start the second. After junior midfielder
Olivia Markert scored with 15:02 left the Bulldogs had a 9-7 lead, but Albany clamped down on defense and scored five times in the final 14:10 for the win.
Markert finished with a hat trick, while Carrasquillo, sophomore midfielder
Payton Vaughn and sophomore midfielder
Jill Gollob also scored. Sophomore goalie
Clare Boone made 11 saves. Sophomore attacker
Olivia Penoyer, junior attacker
Isabelle Webster and senior attacker

Yale travels to Hartford Tuesday for a 4:30 p.m. game.
