WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – The depth of the Yale women's lacrosse team's attack was on full display Tuesday evening at Hartford, as eight different players scored and three had hat tricks in a 17-10 win over the Hawks at Al-Marzook Field. First year midfielder
Bri Carrasquillo led the way with five goals, while junior midfielder
Olivia Markert and junior attacker
Isabelle Webster had three each. Sophomore midfielder
Payton Vaughn added a team-high six draw controls and a pair of ground balls.
Yale (2-1, 0-0 Ivy League) jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Hartford (0-4, 0-0 America East) scored its first goal. The Bulldogs then got the first career goal from first-year midfielder
JoJo Gum to start a 4-1 run. After Hartford scored on a free position, the Bulldogs took a 9-3 lead into halftime.
The Hawks got within 9-4 on a Tiana Vazquez tally with 29:49 left, part of a three-goal day for Hartford's talented freshman defender. But Carrasquillo answered with her third of the day, and senior attacker
Vanessa Yu scored, giving the Bulldogs a seven-goal cushion. Hartford got no closer than six the rest of the way.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Clare Boone made five saves in the first half, then junior goalkeeper
Amelia Drake came in to make five saves in the second half. Yale enjoyed a 52-26 shot advantage.
"From the upperclassmen to the freshmen, everyone has made an impact," said Yu of Yale's attack. "Each of us try to set each other up for success. That's showing."
In addition to Gum, Yale also got a meaningful first career goal from junior attacker
Amanda Hartzell. Her tally on a free position with 6:22 left elicited an emotional reaction from her teammates, and the large brace on her left knee helped explain that. She missed the first two years of her career due to injury.
"I've seen her the last three seasons, and her perseverance through adversity is inspiring," said Yu. "Our upperclassmen in particular could really feel it when she scored that goal. Everyone felt everything she had gone through in that moment."
In addition to Carrasquillo, Gum, Hartzell, Markert, Webster and Yu, Yale also got two goals from sophomore attacker
Olivia Penoyer and one from first-year midfielder
Ana Dieroff. Penoyer added seven ground balls, helping Yale to a 45-18 advantage in that category.
Yale returns to Reese Stadium Saturday for the Ivy League opener, hosting No. 12 Penn.
