NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The 2019-20 Yale women's basketball team gets its first taste of life on the road this weekend, as the Bulldogs travel to Colgate for a game Saturday (1:00 p.m.,
Patriot League Network). This is Yale's first of 14 regular-season road games -- six of which come in a span of 15 days this month.
Last Game
Yale (1-0, 0-0 Ivy League) earned its first win of 2019-20 Wednesday night at Lee Amphitheater vs. local rival Quinnipiac, 63-59. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 17-12 lead at the end of the first quarter, then outlasted the Bobcats in a back-and-forth affair where neither team led by more than six points at any point in the second half. Roxy Barahman (Calabasas, Calif.) led Yale with 23 points, while sophomore forward
Camilla Emsbo (Lakewood, Colo.) added 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Stingy Defense
Yale held Quinnipiac to 39.6% shooting Wednesday night. Since the start of last season, the Bulldogs have held their opponents under 40% shooting 21 times in 30 games.
Critically, Yale held Quinnipiac scoreless on the Bobcats' three offensive possessions in the final 2:30 of the game. That effort sealed the victory.
Winners Keepers
Yale turned the ball over only 14 times in Wednesday's win vs. Quinnipiac. Last season the Bulldogs were 10-3 when turning the ball over 14 times or fewer.
Roxy Off and Running
Senior guard
Roxy Barahman (Calabasas, Calif.) started this season with 23 points in the win vs. Quinnipiac. She started last season with five straight 20 point games en route to reaching the 20 point mark 12 times and leading the Ivy League in points per game (18.6).
Barahman is an ecology & evolutionary biology major in Davenport College at Yale and is a graduate of Oaks Christian. The Bulldogs will play three games in her home state, California, at the end of this month.
Welcome Back EM
Junior guard
Ellen Margaret Andrews (Dallas, Texas) missed all but five games last season due to injury, but came back strong in the her first full game of 2019-20 Wednesday. She shot .556 (5-for-9) while scoring 13 points and grabbing three rebounds in 36 minutes.
Andrews is a history major in Berkeley College and is a graduate of Greenhill School.
Road Warriors
Saturday's game is the start of a stretch of six straight road games for Yale. The Bulldogs will play in three different states -- California, Massachusetts and New York -- while traveling approximately 6,600 miles in 17 days.
Yale-Colgate
The last time Yale and Colgate met, the Bulldogs beat the Raiders 80-61 at Lee Amphitheater in the 2018-19 season opener. Senior guard
Roxy Barahman (Calabasas, Calif.) led Yale with 25 points and the Bulldogs had a 46-44 edge in rebounds.
Scouting Colgate
Colgate (3-0, 0-0 Patriot League) outscored its first two opponents -- NJIT and UMass Lowell -- 152-103, then edged Ivy League opponent Cornell 62-58 Thursday night. The Raiders' leading scorer is Rachel Thompson (15.3 points per game).
