Box Score Kennedy, Skinner Each With Three Hits
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Yale nearly pulled off a big Easter Sunday comeback. Cornell pitcher Lisa Nelson, though, worked out of a jam in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Big Red held on for a 5-3 victory at 5K Corral Field at DeWitt Family Stadium.
Trailing 5-1 entering the final inning, the Bulldogs quickly made things interesting. Carlin Hagmaier led off with a single. With one out, Shelby Kennedy delivered a single to center that scored Hagmaier. Giovy Webb followed with a single. After the second out, Allison Skinner's double plated Kennedy and put runners on second and third.
Sydney Grobman then hit a sharp grounder back at Nelson, who knocked it down, picked it up quickly and threw to first to end the game.
Kennedy and Skinner both had three hits to lead Yale's offense.
Cornell scored three runs in the second inning and one in the third to grab an early lead.
The Bulldogs got one back in the bottom of the third when Kortney Ponce, who had led off with a walk, scored on an error.
The Big Red's final run came on Madeline Avery's RBI triple in the fourth.
Yale outhit Cornell 10-8 but left eight runners on base.
Still, it was a productive weekend for the Bulldogs, who swept a doubleheader from the Big Red on Saturday.
Yale returns to action on Wednesday, hosting a single game with Fairfield. The first pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
