Bulldogs Win First Game 11-4

ITHACA, N.Y. – Yale's bats came alive in a big way in its first Ivy League game. The Bulldogs scored a season-high 11 runs in an 11-4 victory over the Big Red on a cold afternoon at Niemand*Robison Field. Camille Weisenbach led the way. She was 3-for-4, scored three runs and knocked in four.

Cornell rebounded to win the second game 11-3.

Weisenbach had five hits, including a pair of doubles, in the two games. She is now hitting .394 on the season. Sydney Glover added three hits, and Allison Skinner and Laina Do each had two.

Yale (4-8, 1-1 Ivy) wasted little time jumping on the board in the first game. Glover drew a walk in the first at bat of the Ivy season, advanced to second on Brittany Labbadia's sacrifice bunt and scored on a Weisenbach single.

Do's RBI single in the fourth made it 2-0, and the Bulldogs then broke it open by scoring eight runs in the sixth inning. Glover's two-run single, and Weisenbach's three-run double were the big hits in the inning.

After Cornell scored three times in the bottom of the sixth, the Bulldogs tacked on another run in the seventh. Hannah Brennan started the rally with a double, and Do's single down the left field line scored pinch-runner Sydney Ginsberg.

Freshman Francesca Casalino pitched well to earn her team-leading third victory of the season. She struck out seven, did not issue a walk and yielded eight hits.

"I like the way we came out ready to play after a week and a half of no games," said Yale head coach Jen Goodwin. "We took advantage of some Cornell miscues and had some timely hits. Francesca was very effective and shut down a very strong Cornell offense."

The Big Red (5-10, 2-2 Ivy) banged out 18 hits in the second game. Cornell scored twice in the first, twice in the second and three times in the fourth to take command.

Weisenbach doubled home Yale's first run of the game in the third and Yale tallied twice in the sixth.

Freshman Alexa Caruso doubled for the Bulldogs.

"In the second game, Cornell made some adjustments at the plate and got on the board right away," Goodwin said. "I was proud of the way the team fought back late in the game to push a few runs across, but it just wasn't enough."

Yale is scheduled to be in action next on Wednesday, playing a single game at UMass. The first pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
