Middough Scores Second Collegiate Goal

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale field hockey team headed into halftime with Princeton tied 1-1 Saturday afternoon at Johnson Field, leaving the Bulldogs in position to become just the second Ivy League team to knock off the Tigers since the start of the 2008 season. But Princeton responded with a decisive 3-0 run in the second half to pull away for the win.

Yale (1-6, 0-2 Ivy League) hung with the Tigers in a first half that saw multiple scoring chances for each team. After a penalty corner enabled Princeton (3-4, 2-0 Ivy League) to take a 1-0 lead 18:02 in, the Bulldogs answered quickly. Freshman midfielder Carol Middough showcased her scoring touch, driving in from the right side of the circle and chipping the ball high past Princeton goalkeeper Anya Gersoff.

"That was an incredible goal," said Pam Stuper, Yale's Caroline Ruth Thompson '02 Head Coach of Field Hockey. "We started with some good chances in the first 15-20 minutes, and then right after Princeton got one we were able to respond. We walked into the half with a tie ballgame, and that's not something that happens often against Princeton."

But the Tigers scored 39 seconds into the second half, setting the tone for a half in which they would outshoot the Bulldogs 11-5. Two goals in a span of less than 12 minutes later in the half put the game out of reach.

Sydney Kirby finished with a pair of goals for the Tigers. Senior goalkeeper Heather Schlesier made seven saves for Yale.

"This was a tale of two halves," said Stuper. "The first half we played the way we are capable of, but in the second half we did not handle Princeton's pressure well."

The Bulldogs host No. 9 Stanford on Sunday at Noon.
