NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Fast starts helped the Providence
softball team to a pair of wins over Yale on Wednesday on a
gorgeous afternoon at Dewitt Family Field. The Friars led 6-0 after
two innings in the first game en route to a 6-2 victory and jumped
out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning of the second game on
their way to a 9-1 victory. Ashley Sloan had hits in both games to
extend her hitting streak to six for the Bulldogs.
In the first game, the Friars sent 10 batters to the plate and
scored five runs in the first inning. The big hit was a two-run
single by Teresa Bertels. Yale avoided further damage by turning a
nifty double play to end the inning. With the bases loaded, Katelyn
Revens hit a grounder back to Jackie Manzer, Yale's pitcher.
She threw it home for the first out, and McKynlee Westman fired it
on to third to record a second out.
Justine Stratton homered to give the Friars a 6-0 lead in the
second.
The Bulldogs then got two back in the bottom of the second.
Kelsey Warkentine and Liz Tutino walked to start the rally. Both
runners advanced on a ground out and scored when Westman doubled
just inside the right field foul line.
Manzer settled down nicely in the circle for Yale from there,
allowing only one hit over the next three innings. Holly Gutterud
pitched two scoreless innings of relief.
The Bulldogs had a couple of chances to get back in the game.
Christy Nelson walked and eventually reached third in the third but
was left stranded. In the sixth, Tutino singled and Westman walked,
but Providence pitcher Alicia Grosso got out of the jam.
Grosso pitched all seven innings and worked around six walks.
Yale was limited to three hits in the second game. Sloan singled
twice, and Gutterud added an RBI single.
Providence (10-16) got two runs in the first inning and then
broke it open by scoring three times in the fourth and sixth
innings.
The Bulldogs (6-15) tallied their run in the fourth. Meg Johnson
walked. She was erased on Nelson's fielder's choice.
Nelson moved to second on a ground out and scored on
Gutterud's sharp single to right.
Danielle Bertolette started and went five innings in the circle
for the Friars. She struck out three and walked two.
Yale returns to Ivy League play with a pair of doubleheaders
this weekend. The Bulldogs host Cornell on Friday at 2 p.m. and
Princeton on Saturday beginning at 12:30 p.m.
