Late Rally Lifts Quakers To 5-4 Win In Opener; Penn

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Yale softball team got a big day
from its senior class but it wasn't enough to lift the
Bulldogs to victories. Ashley Sloan, Allie Canulli and Lauren
Huddleston combined for seven of Yale's 10 hits on Saturday
and knocked in all four runs, but Penn swept an Ivy League
doubleheader at Warren Field. The Quakers scored five times in the
bottom of the sixth inning of the first game en route to a 5-4
victory, and Taylor Tieman tossed a four-hit shutout in the second
game to lead Penn to a 2-0 victory.
Canulli was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI in the opener for Yale.
Ashley Sloan also knocked in two runs.
The game began as a pitching duel between Kayla Kuretich and
Penn's Chelsea Ott. The Bulldogs finally broke through by
scoring three times in the fifth. Mariclaire Rebman and Holly
Gutterud both got on base to start the rally. With one out,
McKynlee Westman was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Sloan
followed with a two-run single to center. Canulli then capped the
scoring with a two-out RBI single that scored Westman.
Penn, though, erupted for five runs in the sixth. Two-run
doubles by Tieman and Justine Payne highlighted the frame.
Yale scored once in the seventh and had the tying run in scoring
position. With one out, Westman doubled and Sloan reached on an
error. Canulli singled home pinch-runner Chelsey Locarno, but
Tieman came on in relief to record the final two outs and pick up a
save.
Kuretich allowed only one hit through the first four innings and
finished with two strikeouts.
In the second game, the Quakers scored once in the first and
once in the fifth. That was enough for Tieman, who struck out five
and walked only one.
Yale's best scoring chance came in the sixth when Meg
Johnson singled, Rebman reached on an error and Huddleston walked
to load the bases. Tieman, though, worked out of the jam.
Sloan finished 2-for-4 for the Bulldogs, who fell to 6-13
overall and 2-2 in Ivy play.
Gutterud pitched well in defeat, allowing only four hits.
Yale is back in action on Wednesday, hosting Providence in a
doubleheader. The first pitch of the first game at Dewitt Family
Field is slated for 2:30 p.m.
