FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Yale's hitters have struggled against
Sacred Heart in recent meetings. That trend continued in the first
game of Wednesday's doubleheader, but the Bulldogs broke out in a
big way in the second game. After Nicole Sidor tossed a four-hitter
to lead the Pioneers to a 4-1 win in the opener, Yale banged out 12
hits and cruised to a 10-0 victory in the nightcap.
Freshman Jennifer Ong had three hits in the two games, including
a pair of doubles. Lexi Peacock went 2-for-3 in the first game, and
Katie Yanagisawa, Ashley Sloan and Allie Canulli all had two hits
in game two.
Yale (9-18) wasted little time getting on the board in the
second game, scoring twice in the first inning. Yanagisawa led off
with a single and moved to second on Sloan's sacrifice bunt. Ong
then doubled home Yanagisawa, and Allie Canulli followed with an
RBI single.
The Bulldogs added two more runs in the third. Sloan led off
with a double over the right-fielder's head and scored when Nelson
reached on an error. Ong then delivered another RBI double that
made it 4-0.
Yale put it away with five runs in the fourth. McKynlee Westman
started the rally by drawing a walk. Chelsey Locarno then put down
a sacrifice bunt, and Westman beat the throw to second. Yanagisawa
singled to load the bases, and Sloan followed with an RBI single to
right. Nelson's RBI ground out made it 6-0, and Canulli added a
two-run single. Holly Gutterud's single that scored Canulli capped
the scoring.
The Bulldogs tacked on another run in the fifth. Virginia
Waldrop led off with a single and was erased on Yangisawa's
fielder's choice. Yanagisawa then stole second and scored on
Nelson's double to the left-field fence.
Gutterud and Kayla Kuretich combined on a two-hit shutout for
the Bulldogs.
In the first game, Sidor didn't allow a hit until the sixth
inning, a leadoff single to Peacock, who advanced to second on an
error. Ong followed with an RBI single. Nelson also singled
in the inning but was left stranded.
The Bulldogs got the tying run to the plate in the seventh. With
one out, Kelsey Warkentine walked. After the second out, Peacock
singled, but Sidor retired the next hitter to end the game.
Jackie Manzer started in the circle for Yale and had three
strikeouts. Gutterud pitched two scoreless innings of relief.
Sidor struck out eight for the Pioneers.
The Bulldogs return to Ivy League action this weekend, playing a
four-game series at Dartmouth. Both Saturday and Sunday's
doubleheaders begin at 12:30 p.m.
