NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale softball team did a
number of things right in Saturday's first game with Cornell.
The Bulldogs got excellent pitching from Holly Gutterud and Jackie
Manzer, who limited the Big Red's high-powered offense to six
hits. The pitchers also benefitted from some outstanding defense.
Unfortunately, Cornell pitcher Elizabeth Dalrymple was just too
good. She tossed a three-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts to lead the
Big Red to a 3-0 victory. Cornell completed the doubleheader sweep
with a 7-3 win in the second game, despite a home run from
Yale's Allie Canulli.
Dalrymple was magnificent in the opener. She retired the first
10 Yale batters before allowing back-to-back singles to Katie
Yanagisawa and Meg Johnson in the fourth. The Bulldogs only other
hit was a single by Mariclaire Rebman in the fifth.
Gutterud wasn't quite as dominant but she was equally
effective early on. Cornell had two runners reach base in each of
the first two innings but couldn't score. A terrific
shoe-string catch by Canulli in left field helped keep the Big Red
off the board in the second.
Cornell (19-8, 5-1 Ivy) finally broke through in the third on
Kristen Towne's two-out RBI single. A fine play at shortstop
by Johnson prevented further damage.
In the fourth, it was third baseman Christy Nelson who made an
outstanding play. She snared a hard line drive by Ali Tomlinson
leading off the inning.
The Big Red, the defending Ivy League champions, got two
insurance runs in the fifth.
Gutterud scattered six hits in the circle for the Bulldogs.
Manzer then pitched three hitless innings in relief.
Yale's bats came alive in the second game as the Bulldogs
banged out 12 hits. Yanagisawa was 3-for-4, while Canulli and Kayla
Kuretich both added two hits. Nelson, Johnson, Ashley Sloan,
Jennifer Ong and McKynlee Westman also had hits.
Trailing 3-0, Canulli got Yale on the board in the fourth when
she homered over the right-centerfield fence.
Cornell, though, scored two times in both the fifth and sixth
innings to regain control.
The Bulldogs (6-17, 2-4 Ivy) got two back in the bottom of the
sixth on Westman's two-run double to right field that scored
pinch-runner Chelsey Locarno and Canulli.
Yale is back in action on Sunday, playing a doubleheader against
Princeton. The first pitch of the first game is slated for 12:30
p.m.
