Stefon Wheeler joined Tony Reno’s staff as offensive line coach in the spring of 2023 and made an immediate impact, helping the Bulldogs capture the Ivy League title. That same year, one of his linemen, Kiran Amegadjie, was selected in the third round of the NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears. Wheeler also spent part of that spring with the Bears as a participant in the NFL’s Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship.
Wheeler arrived at Yale after four seasons coaching the offensive line at Rhode Island, where his units consistently ranked among the CAA’s best. In 2022, URI finished fourth in both rushing and passing offense, while allowing just 21 sacks in 11 games. Under his guidance, guard Nick Correia earned Third Team All-America honors, and three linemen collected All-CAA recognition. He also coached consensus All-American Kyle Murphy, the anchor of URI’s line in 2019, and helped right tackle Kevin Lawrence reach the CFL.
Prior to URI, Wheeler spent five seasons at Wagner, serving as running game coordinator in his final two years while mentoring eight all-conference linemen. He also coached at Milford Academy Prep, where he was offensive coordinator from 2010–13.
A standout lineman himself, Wheeler was a four-year starter at Michigan State, where he earned All-Big Ten honorable mention twice and was named to the Spartans’ All-Decade Team in 2012. After graduating in 2005, he signed with the New Orleans Saints and went on to play for NFL Europa’s Cologne Centurions and the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts.
