Brian Hamm

Brian Hamm is the Fay Vincent ’31 Head Coach of Baseball at Yale University, a position he has held since June 2022. Under his leadership, the Bulldogs have achieved notable success, culminating in the 2025 Ivy League regular season championship - their first since 2017. In 2024, Yale finished the Ivy League regular season tied for third place, closing the year strong with thirteen wins in their final twenty-two games.

The 2025 team surpassed the 30 win benchmark on their way to a 16-5 Ivy regular season record. Along the way, there were multiple team and individual accomplishments. In April, the Bulldogs were the National Team of the Week by 64Analytics after performing in the top ten in multiple offensive and defensive categories nationally. Recognitions including a Gold Spikes Semifinalist, All-American, and Ivy League Pitcher of the Year and Rookie of the Year. For their accomplishment, Brian Hamm and his staff were honored as the Ivy League Coaching Staff of the Year.

Prior to arriving at Yale, Hamm led Eastern Connecticut State University to the 2022 NCAA Division III National Championship, capping a season in which the Warriors went 49-3. He earned the Skip Bertman Award as National Coach of the Year from the College Baseball Foundation and was named DIII National Coach of the Year by ABCA/ATEC and D3baseball.com.

Hamm spent four seasons at Eastern Connecticut, leading the Warriors to the NCAA Tournament in 2021 and 2022. Under his leadership, ECSU went 108-30 (.783) overall and 38-10 (.792) in Little East Conference play. The Warriors were LEC Regular Season Champions in these two seasons - going 15-1 each year - establishing the LEC record for regular season conference wins and earning Hamm the LEC Coach of the Year Award and the New England Region Coach of the Year Award back-to-back years.

The National Championship was Eastern’s first in 20 years. Hamm’s Warriors broke the school record for wins with 49 and tied the school record with a 23-game winning streak to end the year. For the second straight year, Hamm’s team had three players recognized with All-America honors.

Prior to his tenure at ECSU, Hamm coached at Amherst College for 13 years. He spent the first four assisting ABCA Hall of Fame coach Bill Thurston. In nine years as head coach, Hamm oversaw the winningest period in Amherst baseball’s 165-year history, posting a 221-113 (.662) record. He led the program to four NCAA Division III Tournaments and two NESCAC Tournament Championships and was named NESCAC Coach of the Year in 2011 and 2018. His .725 winning percentage in NESCAC regular-season play is the highest in conference history.

During his tenure at Amherst, Hamm produced more MLB draftees than any other Division III head coach. His teams also placed more players on the NESCAC All-Academic Team than any other NESCAC baseball team.

Dozens of Hamm’s former players work in front offices of MLB organizations. At Amherst, Hamm started one of the first collegiate baseball analytics teams. Members of that team have dramatically influenced baseball at all levels, including two trailblazing female executives, Sarah Gelles (Assistant General Manager, Pirates) and Jasmine Horan (Baseball Operations Manager, Cubs).

Hamm is a 2002 graduate of Middlebury College, where he was a two-sport captain in baseball and soccer. He spent three years as an assistant coach at his alma mater. He also served as an Envoy Coach for Major League Baseball International for three years, working with national teams and professional organizations in Europe. In 2009, MLB honored Hamm with the Julio Puente Envoy Coach Award as the coach who most epitomizes excellence in coaching and player development in international baseball. He is the youngest coach to have received this award.

Hamm holds a master’s degree in sport management from the University of Massachusetts Isenberg School of Management. He currently resides in Branford, CT with his wife Maija Cheung, a Yale surgeon and Chief Medical Officer for a global surgery charity.
