Bulldogs Beat UConn in Five

Ava Poinsett finished with 24 kills to lead Yale

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Bulldogs defeated UConn in five sets to secure a home-opening victory before a raucous crowd at the John J. Lee Amphitheater.  The scores of the match were 18-25, 27-25, 21-25, 25-23 and 15-7.

Match summary:
  • Yale (1-3) secured its first win of the season in its third five-set match.  
  • First-year Ava Poinsett continues to be the force behind the Bulldogs' attack.  Poinsett finished with 24 kills, including 18 in the final three sets.  In addition, she had four kills in a 6-0 run to start the fifth.
  • Poinsett is averaging 4.11 kills over the first four matches.  
  • It was all Yale in the final set.  Poinsett had seven kills without an error on 11 swings, while Gigi Barr and Laurece Abraham both had three kills each.
  • Yale held a 66-57 edge in digs, which included some key plays late in the match to extend rallies.  Arya Jue led the team with 18, while Yuri Park and Poinsett added 14 apiece.  
  • Abraham finished with 13 kills and hit .457 in the middle, and added three solo blocks and six overall. 
  • Yale hit .344 as a team as Bethanie Wu dished out 60 assists.  
  • Isabel Patterson had four aces tonight -- the highest total for a Bulldog thus far on the year.
