Bulldogs Split Doubleheader With Penn

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Yale baseball team split a doubleheader with Penn on Saturday afternoon at Tommy Lasorda Field. The Quakers topped the Bulldogs 4-3 in extra innings in the opener. Yale responded with a 7-4 victory in the second game.

With the split, Penn stayed atop the Ivy League standings with a 17-13 overall record and 11-3 mark in the conference. Yale moved to 21-12 overall with a 9-5 conference record.

Game 1 – Penn 4, Yale 3 (10 innings)
Key Performer
  • Yale starting pitcher Colton Shaw hurled nine strong innings, picking up a no-decision. He allowed three earned runs, while striking out eight.
Scoring Summary
  • Top 1st | Yale tallied a run on a delayed steal by Max Imhoff. 1-0 YALE
  • Bottom 3rd | Penn took the lead on a two-run homer by Davis Baker. 2-1 PENN
  • Bottom 5th | The Quakers added another run on an RBI double by Connor Chavez. 3-1 PENN
  • Top 9th | The Bulldogs tied the game with two runs in the ninth. Jeff Pierantoni was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to cut into the lead. Hayden Sobecki followed up with a great at bat to draw a walk and tie the game. 3-3

  • Alec Atkinson stole his tenth base of the season.
  • Pierantoni drove in his 16th run of the year. Sobecki added his sixth RBI.

Key Performers
  • Jack Ohman delivered another strong start on the mound despite not having his best command. The first year tossed 6.2 innings, while allowing three earned runs. He struck out seven and walked four.
  • Sobecki went 3-for-4 with three RBI.

  • Top 3rd | Tommy Martin singled to right, scoring Sobecki to give Yale the lead. 1-0 YALE
  • Top 4th | Yale scored four runs in the fourth. Atkinson launched a no-doubt two-run homer to left. Later in the inning, Sobecki doubled to center, scoring two more Bulldogs. 5-0 YALE

Game Notes
  • Yale snapped a three-game losing streak. They also snapped Penn's nine-game win streak.
  • Atkinson hit his second home run of the season. Dossa tallied his team-leading fourth homer.
  • Ohman earned his Ivy League-leading sixth win of the season. 
  • Sobecki tallied career-highs in hits and RBI with three each.
  • Ben Winslow, Alex Hwang, and Mick Kelley followed Ohman out of the bullpen. Kelley earned his first save of the season, tossing a scoreless ninth innings.
  • Dossa has now reached base in 28 consecutive games.
