CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Bez Mbeng tallied his third triple double of the season, but the Yale men's basketball team had the nation's longest active winning streak snapped at 13 with a 74-69 defeat at Harvard on Saturday.
The Bulldogs are now 19-7 overall, and 12-1 in Ivy action.
Turning Point
After a basket by
John Poulakidas gave Yale an early 9-4 lead, Harvard responded with a 10-0 run to move ahead 14-9 at the 14:34 mark. From there, the Crimson stayed in control, shooting 53.6% overall (15-of-28) and 50% from beyond the arc (4-of-8) in the first half, taking a 38-27 lead into the break. Yale fought back with a 7-0 run midway through the second half, cutting the deficit to just four (57-53) with 8:43 remaining, but Harvard quickly answered with a three-pointer. A Poulakidas three followed by a Townsend layup brought Yale within two, 69-67, with 51 seconds left, but Harvard responded once again, hitting another three with 21 seconds to go to put the game out of reach for good.
Notable Performances
- Mbeng paced the Bulldogs with a triple double of 20 points on 8-of-15 shooting with 11 rebounds and 11 assists.
- Nick Townsend notched 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting with seven rebounds and two steals.
- John Poulakidas added 12 points.
- Casey Simmons chipped in with 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting.
- Yale tallied 44 points in the paint.
- Harvard had 23 bench points.
