Bulldogs Explode For Nine-Run Victory Over Penn

Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale baseball team is beginning to find its groove offensively. The Bulldogs put up their best run total against Penn since 2011, topping the Quakers 12-3 in the series finale on Sunday at Bush Field. After dropping the doubleheader against Penn on Saturday, Yale recorded 13 hits to down their Ivy League foe. The Bulldogs have scored 49 runs over their past five games. 

With the victory, Yale picked up its eighth win of the season and sport a conference record of 4-5. Penn drops to 13-14 overall with a mark of 5-4 in the Ivy League.

How it Happened
  • Top 2nd | Penn scored three runs through break through on the scoreboard.
  • Bottom 2nd | Following a pair of walks, Garrett Larsen hit a sac fly to center to score Alec Atkinson. Bulldogs trailed 3-1 after two.
  • Bottom 3rd | The Bulldogs took the lead with three runs in the third. First, Jake Williams singled up the middle to score to score Chace Chaplin. Then, with the bases loaded, Tommy Martin notched a single to score two runs.
  • Bottom 4th | Yale scores another trio of runs on a single by Chaplin, a wild pitch, and a double by Davis Hanson.
  • Bottom 5th | Yale catcher Robert Ciulla tripled off the left field wall for his first RBI of the game. Jeff Pierantoni followed up with a gorgeous bunt down the third base line, scoring Ciulla. Pierantoni reached on a single. Bulldogs led 9-3 after five.
  • Bottom 8th | The Bulldogs finished up their fine offensive performance with three more runs. Chaplin, Hanson, and Williams also knocked in runs to conclude a 12-3 victory for the Elis.
Game Notes
  • With the win, the Bulldogs snapped a four-game losing streak against the Quakers. It was the most runs that Yale has scored against Penn since putting up 13 in 2011.
  • Every Yale player in the starting lineup reached base, and eight different Bulldogs scored runs.
  • Ciulla recorded his third extra base hit of the weekend with his fifth inning triple. The catcher homered and tripled during Saturday's doubleheader.
  • Williams recorded three hits and is batting .409 over his last five games.
  • Hanson recorded his team-leading eighth and ninth doubles and 17th and 18th RBI.
  • Yale starting pitcher Colton Shaw picked up the victory, throwing six strong innings while not allowing an earned run. Shaw struck out five and induced seven ground balls. Colton Shaw earned the save by pitching three innings, of shutout ball while fanning six.
  • Martin had an excellent two-game stretch at the plate, recording three hits and reached base six times.
  • Pierantoni recorded his sixth multi-hit game of the season.
  • Chaplin notched three hits and knocked in a pair of runs.
