Jake Williams drove in three runs to lead the Yale baseball team to a 6-3 victory on the road against Cornell on Sunday afternoon. After dropping the first two games of the series on Saturday, the Bulldogs managed to avoid the sweep thanks to the offensive prowess of Williams and a strong pitching performance from starter
Daniel Cohen.
With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 13-19 overall and are firmly in the hunt to qualify for the conference tournament. The Bulldogs are tied for fourth place in the Ivy League standings, with the top four teams advancing to the postseason tournament. Cornell drops to 13-14 and trail first-place Columbia by one game.
How it Happened
- Top 2nd | Garrett Larsen bunted home Kaiden Dossa to give the Bulldogs the 1-0 lead.
- Bottom 2nd | Cornell tied the score on a solo home run by Mark Quatrani.
- Top 3rd | Williams took a breaking ball the other way for a single to score Jeff Pierantoni.
- Top 5th | Williams came through once again with a single through the left side to score Pierantoni for the second time. The Bulldogs led 3-1 after five.
- Top 7th | The visitors tacked on three more runs in the seventh. Williams added his third RBI on a sac fly. Davis Hanson drew a walk with the bases loaded to score another run.
- Bottom 8th | Cornell got two runs back on a single by TJ Swidorski.
- Bottom 9th | Yale relief pitcher Tate Evans closed the door with two strikeouts in the home half of the ninth to earn the save.
Game Notes
- Cohen picked up his third win of the season after tossing 7.1 innings while only allowing two earned runs. Cohen fanned eight.
- Evans earned his fifth save of the season.
- Pierantoni added three hits and crossed the plate three times out of the leadoff spot.
- Williams picked up three RBI. He has 13 for the season.
