NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A repeat of the thrilling 74-68 overtime win at the Palestra less than two weeks ago was not in the cards Friday night at Lee Amphitheater for the Yale women's basketball team against Penn. The Quakers jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, winning 66-52. Senior forward
Brenna McDonald shined for Yale, scoring a career-high 25 points and adding 12 rebounds and three blocks.
With the win, Penn (12-10, 4-5 Ivy League) moves into a tie with Brown for fourth in the Ivy League standings. The Bulldogs are one game back of those two teams.
Yale (6-16, 3-6 Ivy League) was limited to four points in the first quarter and never fully recovered. Trailing by 10 after the first, the Bulldogs got within six on multiple occasions in the second but could get no closer. A buzzer-beating three pointer by Penn guard Mataya Gayle (14 points) sent the Quakers into halftime up 27-18.
Penn's lead stayed between seven and 11 points throughout the third, despite six points each from McDonald and junior forward
Grace Thybulle. Yale got no closer than nine in the fourth, which ended with the Quakers scoring their final 12 points at the free throw line (in the final 3:31 of the game).
