NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A Midwestern road trip is up next for the Bulldogs as they embark on a two-game swing against UIC and Purdue this weekend.
Bulldog Facts
- Four players scored in double figures in the season-opening 88-62 victory over defending MAAC Champs, Quinnipiac. John Poulakidas led the way with a team-19 points, first year Isaac Celiscar had an 18-point night in his collegiate debut. Bez Mbeng had 17 points, while Nick Townsend had 14 points.
- All three first years made their season debuts on Monday night against Quinnipiac. Isaac Celiscar played 25 minutes, shot 75-percent from the field and picked up eight rebounds in addition to his 18 points. Both Jordan Brathwaite and Riley Fox entered the game and picked up their first collegiate points.
- Yale dominated Quinnipiac on the boards and in the paint. The Bulldogs nearly doubled the rebounding output of the Bobcats, collecting 50 total rebounds compared to 27 from the visitors. Yale also outscored Quinnipiac 40-18 in points in the paint.
- Yale has now won its season opener in eight of the last nine seasons.
- The Bulldogs' 23 victories during the 2023-24 season are tied with the 2019-20 team for the modern-day school record. Yale won 30 games in 1906-07. The Bulldogs have now won 20 or more games in four of the last five seasons and seven times in Jones' tenure as head coach. Prior to Jones' arrival, Yale had won 20 or more games in only four of the previous 107 seasons.
A Look at History Against UIC
- This will be just the second time in program history that the Bulldogs will face UIC. They first met on Nov. 21, 2014 at the Men Against Breast Cancer Classic in Kent Ohio. Yale took that meeting 70-58.
- Yale's Justin Sears led the team with 16 points, six rebounds, three blocks, and two steals, while Javier Duren had 15 points, nine rebounds and six assists.
- In that game, Yale shot 44.2% from the field and 45.0% from the three-point line.
Scouting UIC
- UIC enters the night with a 1-0 overall record after winning its season opener over St. Francis (Ill.) 91-43, improving its record to 38-40 (.487) all-time in season openers, including a 23-21 (.523) record in its Division I era (1981-82 to present).
- The 48-point victory was the largest season-opening win for the Flames since 1977, it was also UIC's largest margin of victory in any game since Nov. 19, 2023, when the Flames downed Aurora, 99-48, at Credit Union 1 Arena (also the last time UIC scored 90 points in a regulation game).
A Look at History Against Purdue
- Yale and Purdue have played twice before. First, a 76-66 Boilermaker victory on Dec. 27, 1962. That Yale team went on to earn a share of the Ivy League championship but lost to Princeton in a one-game playoff to determine the Ivy League's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament. Yale and Purdue were scheduled to play in 2020-21, but Yale's season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
- The Bulldogs and Boilermakers faced off in the 2022 NCAA East Region First Round. Purdue took that win, 78-56, before a sellout crowd in Milwaukee. Azar Swain paced the Bulldogs' offense with 18 points.
- The Bulldogs' senior class helped the program earn three-straight NCAA Tournament bids, which was the first senior class to achieve this feat.
Scouting the Boilermakers
- Monday's game marks the third of a four-game season opening home stand for Purdue.
- The Boilermakers are currently ranked No. 14 in the country.
- They are coming off a 90-73 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, which marked their 12th-straight season-opening victory.
- Fletcher Loyer led the team with 21 points, while Trey Kaufman-Renn scored 15 points.
- That win also marked their 27th straight home victory over non-conference teams. It was also their 18th-straight home victory, which is tied for the sixth longest streak nationally.
