Yale Shuts Out No. 19 Temple, 3-0; Two Goals for Massée

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale field hockey team made the most of the final home game of the regular season Sunday, shutting out No. 19 Temple 3-0 on a sunny fall afternoon at Johnson Field. This was the Bulldogs' fourth shutout of the season.

Yale improves to 10-5 overall (3-3 in the Ivy League), while Temple falls to 9-7 overall (4-2 in the Big East).

Summary
  • Ymre Massée was the difference in the first half. The Yale first year scored her third and fourth goals of the year – one at 9:36 of the first quarter and one at 17:37 of the second quarter – to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. The first came in spectacular fashion, as she received the ball from Hettie Whittington with her back to the goal and was able to turn around and flick it high past Temple goalie Isabella Ospitale. On the second, Victoria Collee played the ball across and Massée jammed it home.
  • After a scoreless third quarter, Julia Freedman put the game out of reach at 56:07 of the fourth with her second goal of the season. On a penalty corner, Whittington sent the ball towards the goal and Freedman deflected it in.
  • Alexa Pitts snuffed out several good scoring chances in the final moments to preserve the shutout. With three minutes to play, she used her blocker to turn aside a penalty corner shot from Marsha Ariesen. With 2:20 left, she came charging out and dove to kick away a shot by Catherine Arentz. Her seventh and final save came with 44 seconds left, as she stayed up to turn aside a shot by Peyton Rieger.

Notes
  • Yale finished with a 20-11 shot advantage and a 13-7 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Pitts' seven saves tied her career high, set at Drexel earlier this season.
  • Whittington has six assists in the last seven games and now leads the team with seven for the season. She has nearly tripled her point total from last season, from 2-2-6 to 5-7-17. Her point total leads the team.
  • This was Yale's first win vs. a ranked opponent since a 3-2 overtime win vs. then-No. 22 Penn Oct. 22, 2022.
  • Yale's first-year class has accounted for 15 of the team's 41 goals this year.
  • This is the most wins in a season for Yale (10) since the Bulldogs went 10-7 in 2018.
  • The Bulldogs finished the regular season 5-2 at home.
  • This was the final regular season home game for Yale's seven seniors:
