Women's Hockey to Host "Mandi Schwartz Whiteout" Game on October 26

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -  The Yale women's hockey team will host the "Mandi Schwartz Whiteout" game on Saturday, Oct. 26 against Quinnipiac. Mandi Schwartz '10, a former Yale women's ice hockey player, passed away after a battle with acute myeloid leukemia on April 3, 2011, at the age of 23.

After being diagnosed with cancer in her junior year, Mandi's search for a genetic match for a stem cell transplant to save her life inspired thousands to sign up as potential marrow or blood stem cell donors. No perfect match was ever found for her.

Since then, Yale has launched the Mandi Schwartz Marrow Donor Registration Drive, which is part of the nationwide "Get in the Game. Save a Life" campaign for the National Marrow Donor Program. The athletic department has held drives in each of the past 14 springs, ever since Mandi was first diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in December of 2008. To date, 100 donors from Yale's drive have been matched with recipients across the country.

Prior to Saturday's game, Mandi's life and legacy as a Yale student-athlete will be honored before the National Anthem. The first 150 fans in attendance will receive a limited-edition long-sleeve t-shirt.

"The Mandi Schwartz Whiteout" game will begin at 3 p.m. at Ingalls Rink.
