MONTGOMERY, Ala. – After day after homering in a Yale victory,
Colton Shaw contributed to a win in another way: on the mound.
Shaw pitched into the eighth, retired 14 in a row at one point and earned the win in a 7-4 victory over Alabama State on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Bulldogs took the series and improved to 3-3 overall.
Jimmy Chatfield, who had three hits today, singled home
AJ Gaich to tie the game at 1-1 in the third. From there, Yale took control.
The Bulldogs scored two more in the fourth.
Beck Milner started the rally with a single up the middle and
Jeff Pierantoni (2 hits and 2 runs scored today) reached on a throwing error.
One out later,
Davis Hanson singled to center -- to drive in two of his three RBIs today – and score Milner and Pierantoni. Yale put two more on the board in the fifth. Gaich drew a lead off walk, stole second and advanced to third on an error.
One out later, Chatfield tripled home Gaich.
Tommy Martin followed with an RBI ground out to plate Chatfield.
That would be enough for Shaw, who after allowing a run in the opening inning did not allow another run through the sixth.
Daniel Cohen came on to get the final five outs and earn his first collegiate save.
The Bulldogs return to action next weekend on the West Coast. The trip begins with a doubleheader on Saturday at the University of San Francisco.
