Softball Falls to Western Carolina, Michigan State

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Yale softball team fell in their opening set of games to Western Carolina, 8-4, and Michigan State, 12-6. With the losses the Bulldogs dropped to 4-8 overall, while the Catamounts improved to 6-9, and the Spartans improved to 7-12 on the season.
 
Game One: Western Carolina 8, Yale 4
  • Western Carolina wasted no time in getting on the board with a RBI triple to right center that eventually scored two.
  • The Catamounts added two more in the third inning on a sacrifice fly to left field and an error.
  • Yale's Willa Ferrer got the squad on the board with a solo home run to left field, 4-1.
  • Western extended its lead to six with a fielder's choice that ended up scoring three runs on the play.
  • It was Ferrer again for the Bulldogs as the junior knocked a two RBI double to left center, bringing home both Maddie Latta and Ava Kang.
  • The Catamounts responded in the bottom half of the inning with a RBI single to center field.
  • The Bulldogs capped their scoring in the top of the seventh inning, scoring on a groundout.
 
Game Two: Michigan State 12, Yale 6
  • The second game was a scoring frenzy as the team's scored a combined 18 runs.
  • Michigan State was the first to strike, picking up three first-inning runs.
  • Yale responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs on an error by the right fielder.
  • The Spartans recorded two runs in the third inning off two hits.
  • Yale would not go away and had an answer for the Spartans in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sophie Woodridge started the inning with a single to center field. SJ Mull's single down the left field line put runners on first and second before Maddie Latta loaded the bases. Lauren Perren stepped to the plate and knocked a two-out, three RBI double to center field that tied the game at five all.
  • Michigan then had an explosive fifth inning that saw them rack up six runs and take a seven-run lead.
  • Carmen Muscolina hit a seventh inning solo home run, but the Spartans' fifth inning rally proved to be the difference maker.
