HAMDEN, Conn. – Momentum seemed to be in favor of Quinnipiac when the Bobcats scored their third goal in a row to pull within 6-5 of the No. 21 Yale women's lacrosse team with 11:53 to play in the third quarter Wednesday afternoon at QU's Soccer & Lacrosse Stadium. But that would wind up being the last goal Quinnipiac scored. Much as they had done in the season opening win last Saturday against Vermont – which featured a span of 28 shutout minutes – the Bulldog defense clamped down and held the Bobcats scoreless for 26:53. Eight straight Yale goals made the final 14-5.
Yale (2-0, 0-0 Ivy League) jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first, including three goals from sophomore attacker
Jenna Collignon – the
reigning Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week. But Quinnipiac (1-2, 0-0 MAAC) outscored Yale 3-1 in the second quarter, then scored the first goal of the third, to pull within one.
The Bulldogs' dominance on the draw helped quell any chance of a Bobcat comeback. After QU midfielder Maddie Deegan's goal made the score 6-5 Yale, sophomore midfielder
Sky Carrasquillo got the draw – one of 12 on the day for her. That jump-started a stretch in which the Bulldogs scored three goals (by first year midfielder
Bella Saviano, Collignon and sophomore attacker
Taylor Everson) in just over two minutes. The Bulldogs got the draw after each goal, keeping the Bobcats on the defensive.
Trailing 9-5 with five minutes left in the third, QU earned a free position attempt – but sophomore attacker
Caroline Burt caused a turnover and junior attacker
Bri Carrasquillo scored to make the score 10-5. Following another Bobcat turnover, this one caused by sophomore midfielder
Fallon Vaughn, senior midfielder
Payton Vaughn scored and the Bulldogs went into the fourth up 11-5. They tacked on three more goals in the final quarter for the 14-5 final.
Collignon finished with four goals while
Bri Carrasquillo had three. Everson, Saviano and sophomore midfielder
Taylor Lane each had a pair and
Payton Vaughn finished with one. Senior attacker
Olivia Penoyer had six assists, tying her career high.
Fallon Vaughn had four caused turnovers and three draw controls. Starting goalie
Clare Boone made four saves on nine shots, while
Cami Donadio stopped the only shot she faced.
Yale plays at No. 5 Stony Brook Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
