After a tightly contested first quarter, Yale (2-6, 0-0 Ivy League) emerged with a 12-11 lead. The Bulldogs built that lead throughout the second quarter, outscoring UMass (1-8, 0-0 Atlantic 10) 22-12 in that frame.
UMass got within five on an and-one with 2:58 left in the third, but on the following Yale possession Thybulle set junior guard
Nyla McGill up for a layup, and McGill drew the foul. She hit the free throw to help Yale maintain some breathing room. Still, the Minutewomen kept coming and were able to trim their deficit to 48-46 entering the fourth quarter.
UMass tied the game 30 seconds into the fourth quarter, but the Bulldogs answered with baskets from senior forward
Brenna McDonald and Thybulle and a free throw by Thybulle to get the lead back to five. The lead then got trimmed to two twice, but the Bulldogs ended the game on a 13-7 run – including five points by Capstraw – to keep the Minutewomen at bay.
In addition to Capstraw's 21, the Bulldogs had three other double-digit scorers: Clark (15 points), McGill (12 points) and Thybulle (12 points). Thybulle's game-high 10 rebounds gave her her first double-double since Nov. 11, 2022 at Saint Joseph's.
