STOCKTON, Calif. – In the first game of its California trip, the Yale women's basketball team fell to Pacific 66-59 Monday night at Alex G. Spanos Center. Junior guard
Nyla McGill had her first double-double of the year, finishing with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The first quarter was tied 8-8 with 4:35 to play before a late run by Yale (0-5, 0-0 Ivy League). A three-pointer by sophomore guard
Kiley Capstraw near the end helped send the Bulldogs into the break up 17-12.
The see-saw battle continued in the second half, with neither team leading by more than five points. The Tigers had a 33-29 advantage at the half thanks in part to going on a 7-0 run and hitting eight of their 14 shots (.571) in the second quarter.
Senior guard
Klara Astrom, the team's lone California native, knotted the game 35-35 at 5:26 of the third with a three-pointer. After she followed that up with an assist to senior forward
Brenna McDonald for a layup and a 7-0 Yale run, Pacific (3-1, 0-0 WCC) called timeout. The Tigers then went on a 6-0 run before McGill scored seven straight points, starting with her first career three-pointer. A layup by McDonald sent Yale into the fourth up 46-41.
Yale built its lead up to eight, 49-41, early in the fourth before Pacific responded with a 9-0 run to take the lead, 50-49, with 5:35 to play. Capstraw ended that run with a jumper, but Pacific held a 58-53 lead with less than two minutes to go. The Tigers then forced a backcourt violation by Yale and got a turnaround jumper from center Elizabeth Elliott to put the game out of reach.
Notes
- Capstraw and senior guard Jenna Clark finished with 11 points each, with Clark adding six assists. Junior forward Grace Thybulle also scored 11.
- Yale limited Pacific to eight points and a .214 shooting percentage in the third.
