No. 15 UConn Holds Off Yale Comeback

STORRS, Conn. – The Yale baseball team put together a late comeback Wednesday afternoon at No. 15 UConn, trimming the Huskies' lead to 6-3 with three runs in the top of the seventh inning. But UConn got out of that inning without further damage, stranding a pair of Bulldogs on base, and then tacked on a pair of runs in the eighth. Yale got one back in the top of the ninth and had the bases loaded with one out before a strikeout and a groundout ended the game.

Yale (17-15, 7-8 Ivy League) utilized six different pitchers in the game, and UConn scored in each of the first five innings – two in the third and one in each of the others. The Bulldogs began battling back in the seventh, as Teddy Hague's infield single with runners on first and third and one out scored a run. Carson Swank then singled up the middle to score two. UConn brought in lefthander Garrett Coe from the bullpen, and he retired the next two batters to end the threat.

UConn (34-8, 8-1 Big East) scored a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. Those runs came in handy when Yale began rallying in the ninth. Jake Gehri drove in Jimmy Martin with a single, and AJ Gaich followed with a single that loaded the bases. But Huskies righthander Justin Willis, who had come in to face Gehri, got the next two batters out to finish off the win.

Gehri finished 3-for-5 with an RBI, while Hague, Swank and Alec Atkinson each had two hits. The Bulldogs stole four bases in five attempts. Yale's six pitchers combined for five strikeouts, with two each by righthanders Grant Kipp and Mark Capell in one inning of work each.

Yale next hosts Penn for a three-game Ivy League series that starts with a single game Friday at 1:00 p.m. and concludes with a doubleheader Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
