NEW YORK, N.Y. – Willa Ferrer sure made the most of a weekend trip to her hometown of New York City. Ferrer belted a two-run home run in the sixth inning, erasing a 1-0 deficit, as the Yale softball team rallied for a 3-1 victory over Columbia.
The Bulldogs took two of the three games from the Lions over the weekend, and Ferrer played a big role. She had a hit in each of the three games and knocked in a total of four runs.
Trailing 1-0 entering the sixth,
Grayson Vives led off with a single. With one out, Ferrer belted the first pitch she saw over the centerfield fence. It capped a joyous homecoming for Ferrer, who played her high school softball at the Fieldston School, which is less than two miles from Columbia's complex.
Yale (8-17, 6-6 Ivy) got an outstanding pitching performance from
Nicole Conway, who recorded all 21 outs, struck out four and yielded only three hits.
Maddie Latta, Sam Goodcase and
Gretchen Bunovsky also had hits for the Bulldogs.
Carolyn Skotz scored Yale's third run in the seventh inning after drawing a walk
Conway retired the final five hitters she faced, including striking out Maddie Souza looking to end the game.
The Bulldogs take a break from Ivy League play on Wednesday, hosting Hartford in a single game. The first pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
