Jimmy Chatfield homered, had four hits and drove in five runs to lead the Bulldogs to a 12-10 victory at California Baptist on Saturday night in Riverside, Calif.
The Bulldogs (7-5) pounded out 15 hits, jumped out to a 4-1 lead after three innings and never trailed. With the victory, Yale has won six of eight.
Alec Atkinson went 3 for 4 with two runs scored, while
Mason LaPlante and
Tommy Martin both had a hit, two walks and three runs scored.
Mike Walsh (2-0) pitched six solid innings and earned the victory.
Mick Kelley tossed the final three innings and earned his second save of the season.
The story tonight was the offense. Chatfield opened the scoring in the first with a sac fly to score LaPlante, who had an infield single to lead off the game. Martin walked after LaPlante and later scored on a passed ball.
Jeff Pierantoni tripled home a run in the second. In the third, Chatfield delivered a solo shot to left center.
In a four-run fifth, Chatfield doubled home a run. Yale added two more runs on wild pitches and a balk to lead 8-3.
Yale added three more in the eighth, capped by Chatfield's two-run single.
Kelley entered the ninth with a two run lead and held it. After allowing a lead-off single, Kelley retired the next three batters and struck out the final two.
The teams wrap up the three-game series tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. Eastern Time.
