Yale Earns Extra-Inning Win at Auburn

Bulldogs and Tigers Split Doubleheader

The Bulldogs earned a hard-fought first victory of the season at Auburn on Saturday night after a tough, one-run loss in game one of a doubleheader.

Jake Gehri scored on a wild pitch to break a 3-3 tie in the 10th and Tommy Martin drove home the eventual game-winning run later in the inning to lift the Bulldogs to a 5-4 victory.  Mark Capell pitched four effective innings in relief and earned his first collegiate victory.

Yale bounced back from its first two games and closed out the three-game series on a high note.

"We did not play well at all in game one on Friday night," Yale head coach John Stuper said. "They bounced back in a big way today. Had a chance to win both, but after getting "walked off" in game one, to come back and battle a good SEC team into extra innings, and get a win, says a lot. Really proud of my guys."

After dropping the first game on a walk-off homer, the Bulldogs responded with a comeback of their own in the nightcap.  Trailing 3-2 entering the ninth, Jake Williams (3 hits in game two) doubled down the right field line to score Pierce Blohowiak who reached on a walk.

Colton Shaw started for the Bulldogs and tossed six scoreless innings.  He struck out four, walked two and gave up two hits.

Bulldog pitching held Auburn to four hits over 10 innings in game two.

Williams plated the first run of the game in the seventh with a double to score Blohowiak.  In the eighth, Jimmy Chatfield launched Yale's first homer of the season with a rocket over the left field wall to tie the game.  Auburn regained the lead with a run in the bottom half of the inning.

In game one, the Bulldogs led 3-0 after three and outhit Auburn 9-5 in the game.  The Tigers completed the comeback with a Kason Howell walk-off homer.

LaPlante, Swank and Atkinson all had two hits and a run scored.  Yale had six stolen bases including three by Swank.

Yale scored first when LaPlante singled to right, stole second,  and advanced to third on a wild pitch.  Swank singled to drive him in.

Martin delivered a sac fly in the second to score Atkinson, who led off the inning with a single.  Chatfield singled to advance Atkinson to second. Shaw sacrificed Atkinson to third.

Swank tripled to lead off the third and scored on an Atkinson double. Auburn came back.

Mike Walsh started and went the first five for Yale. He allowed three runs, all earned and struck out three.

Entering a tied game in the sixth, Reid Easterly was solid in relief of Walsh. Easterly allowed one hit over the first three innings with no walks and three strikeouts before allowing the homer to lead off the ninth.

The two teams scheduled the doubleheader today due to Sunday's forecasted weather in Alabama. Yale returns to action on Friday to open a four-game series at the University of Washington.
