NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale women's basketball team put its scoring depth on display Wednesday night at Christl Arena, with five players scoring in double digits in a 71-66 win vs. Army. Junior guard
Jenna Clark led the way with 15 points, adding a team-best five assists.
Yale (2-2, 0-0 Ivy League) was less than 48 hours removed from a thrilling home win vs. Fairfield Monday, the first win with
Dalila Eshe as the team's Joel E. Smilow, Class of 1954 Head Coach of Women's Basketball. The Bulldogs fell behind by as many as 12 in the second quarter Wednesday night, but chipped away steadily through the rest of the quarter. They closed within four on a pair of free throws by first-year guard
Kiley Capstraw at 3:08 of the second, and Army went into halftime with a 35-29 lead.
Junior guard
Elles van der Maas opened the third quarter with a three, setting the tone for a second half in which Yale outscored Army 42-31. That included a 9-1 run to start the third, punctuated by a layup for sophomore guard/forward
Mackenzie Egger that got Yale's lead to 39-36.
Army (1-3, 0-0 Patriot League) would not go quietly; the teams were separated by no more than four points for the rest of the third. The Black Knights led 50-48 heading into the fourth, and led as late as the 7:42 mark of the fourth (54-53). But sophomore guard
Nyla McGill's jumper off a Clark assist sparked a 6-0 run, and the Bulldogs would not relinquish the lead again.
Army got within two with 2:53 left before McGill answered with a driving layup. After junior guard
Klara Astrom got the rebound of a miss by Army, Clark came off an Egger screen to hit a jumper for a 69-63 lead. Army got a three-pointer to cut the lead to three before Egger sealed the win with a pair of free throws.
In addition to Clark's 15, Yale got 14 points from van der Maas, 12 each from Astrom and McGill, and 10 from Egger. McGill added 10 rebounds for her second double-double in three games. She also had a team-best five steals. As a team the Bulldogs finished with only 10 turnovers, their lowest total since also having 10 at Drexel Dec. 14, 2021.
Clark is now the fifth different Bulldog to lead the team in scoring (including ties) in the first four games.
Yale, in the midst of a five-game stretch on the road, travels to Maine Saturday.
