NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Yale field hockey team outshot Colgate 29-10 Saturday afternoon at Johnson Field, but for much of the game Raiders keeper Anna Unger kept her team within striking distance. The Bulldogs finally broke through when junior midfielder
Alissa Wong scored off her own rebound at 26:11, and senior midfielder
Iliana Cabral added an insurance goal at 35:01 on a penalty corner. That was more than enough for sophomore goalkeeper
Luanna Summer, who made eight saves en route to Yale's second shutout of the season. Unger finished with 18 saves.
Â
Cabral and Wong have featured prominently in the Yale offense at times in the past, totaling seven goals and seven assists combined for their careers entering the day. Saturday marked Wong's second goal this season and Cabral's first.
Â
"Alissa plays a defensive midfield for us, but she does find those opportunities in the attacking 25," said
Pam Stuper, Yale's Caroline Ruth Thompson '02 Head Coach of Field Hockey. "She has sunk some important goals for us. And Iliana has been training with our attack penalty corner unit, filling in those gaps and doing a nice job. She's got great hands around the goal."
Â
Four Bulldogs had at least four shots each -- led by six from sophomore forward/midfielder
Ashley Kim -- as Yale (2-2, 0-0 Ivy League) reached the 29 shot mark for the second time this season (the Bulldogs opened the year with 30 shots in a 6-0 win vs. Merrimack).
Â
"This season we have definitely worked on possession in the circle, moving around to get free, and having balance in the circle. It's starting to come together," said Stuper. "Our depth is the best it's been in a long time, and that allows us different looks -- taking advantage of players that are hot, and playing a faster game with more subs."
Â
Summer, in her first season as a starter, made several big saves in the fourth quarter to preserve the shutout.
Â
"Lu's just had a great start to the season," said Stuper. "She has stepped in and been a leader in goal, setting up the defense and organizing things while also making sure to come in and take care of the ball when she needs to."
Â
Colgate (0-4, 0-0 Patriot League) got a team-high four shots from forward Taylor Casamassa.
Â
Yale returns to action Sunday at 2:00 p.m. vs. Wagner at Johnson Field.
