NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Yale field hockey team's offensive depth was on full display Sunday afternoon, as six different players scored goals in a 6-1 win vs. Hofstra. The Bulldogs' two leading goal scorers -- sophomore forward
Lena Ansari and junior midfielder
Théodora Dillman -- each delivered a goal, and the Bulldogs also got tallies from first-year forward
Ellie Barlow, first-year back
Keely Comizio, senior forward/midfielder
Kelly Dolan and sophomore forward/midfielder
Ashley Kim.
Â
"We have gotten a lot of goals from 'T' and Lena this year but we know we can count on multiple other people to score, whether it's a field goal or a corner," said
Pam Stuper, Yale's Caroline Ruth Thompson '02 Head Coach of Field Hockey. "It was nice to see people connecting."
Â
Hofstra (7-10, 1-4 CAA) opened the scoring with a goal from midfielder Lieke Gorsse at 21:13, but after that it was all Bulldogs. Yale answered on a penalty corner just over a minute later as Ansari (the inserter) and senior midfielder
Sarah King (the stick stopper) set Dillman up for a goal at 22:23. Six minutes later Comizio notched her first career goal, knocking in a rebound during another penalty corner.
Â
Comizio, the sister of former Yale captain
Kiwi Comizio '19, has made an impact on the team quickly -- she has played in all 15 games and started the last 10.Â
Â
"We knew Keely was a solid back coming from very successful high school and club teams," said Stuper. "She's come along. We have worked her into our corner unit more and more, and today she got in there to rebound and put it away."
Â
Leading 2-1 at halftime, the Bulldogs extended the lead in the third when senior midfielder
Imogen Davies set up Barlow for a goal. Davies then assisted on a goal by Ansari early in the fourth, the first of three goals in that quarter for Yale. Dolan's goal, assisted by first-year forward
Lily Ramsey, and Kim's goal, assisted by Dillman, put the game well out of reach and continued a trend of strong fourth quarters for Yale recently. The Bulldogs have won three of their last four games and have outscored their opponents 7-2 in the fourth quarters of those wins.Â
Â
Sunday's effort was particularly noteworthy given that this was Yale's third game in five days.
Â
"The thing that was most impressive is how the team handled three games in a five-day span," said Stuper. "This was our best performance of the year. This is why we do the training that we do. We talked about attacking one quarter at a time. The past few games we had only played three good quarters. Today, entering the fourth quarter, the team's approach was 'We need to finish this out'."
Â
Sophomore goalkeeper
Luanna Summer made seven saves, and Dillman delivered a defensive save. Yale outshot Hofstra 16-13.Â
Â
This was the most goals in a game for Yale (7-8, 2-3 Ivy League) since opening the season with a 6-0 win vs. Merrimack. The Bulldogs host Dartmouth next Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
