CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Yale women's basketball team fell just short of history Friday night at Harvard, as a 66-57 Crimson victory snapped the Bulldogs' winning streak at eight -- leaving them tied for the school record in that category. Held to their lowest point total of the season, the Bulldogs saw a lead slip away early in the fourth quarter en route to their first loss since Dec. 6.
"We're so process-driven, instead of results-driven, that we were less focused on the streak than anybody else," said
Allison Guth, Yale's Joel E. Smilow, Class of 1954 Head Coach of Women's Basketball. "What was painful about this one is we could have controlled the game better with our offensive decision-making."
Yale (14-4, 4-1 Ivy League) came into the game leading the Ivy League in scoring, but it was clear from the start that the Crimson defense was going to be tough. The Bulldogs were held to eight points in the first quarter, shooting 2-for-13.
Down by 10 entering the second, Yale rallied to tie the game 23-23 on a three-pointer by junior guard
Ellen Margaret Andrews, part of a 15 point night for her. A steal by first year guard
Jenna Clark then set Andrews up for the go-ahead layup. Yale went into halftime up 31-29.
Harvard (12-6, 3-2 Ivy League) tied the game early in the third, one of five times the game would be tied in that period. A late three-pointer by Crimson guard Maggie McCarthy helped Harvard take a 48-47 lead heading into the fourth.
Yale went ahead 52-51 on a layup by senior guard
Roxy Barahman with 7:22 left in the game, but the Bulldogs missed their next three shots from the field -- and one of two free throws -- as Harvard built its lead to eight with 4:23 left. The Bulldogs got no closer than six the rest of the way.
Barahman finished with a team-high 21 points, while sophomore forward
Camilla Emsbo led in rebounds with 10.
"Give credit to Harvard; they were tough," said Guth. "We got out-rebounded 50-27, which is a stat I always look at. I believe in our team, and this was a wake-up call. We've got to take care of it one possession at a time."
Yale visits Dartmouth on Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. tipoff.
