NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale men's fencing team, ranked No. 8 in the nation, heads to Cambridge, Mass., this weekend, where they will compete in the Ivy League Round Robins, hosted by Harvard.
Last season, Yale placed third overall, its best Ivy finish since 2011. Captain
Isaac Shelanski finished the weekend last year as champion in men's epee, securing First Team All-Ivy Honors. Sophomores
Earnest Chen,
Safi Haider, and
Andrew Zhang all secured Second Team All-Ivy Honors for their standout performance.
Yale begins the championship on Saturday with a match against Penn at 10 a.m.. Last year, the Bulldogs were victorious over the Quakers. This season, the teams have faced each other twice, with each team securing one victory.
Next, Yale will face Princeton at noon for the first time this season. Last year the Bulldogs were victorious in a narrow 14-13 match.
After a break for lunch, Yale will ends the day with bouts vs. Cornell at 2:45 p.m. and Harvard at 4:45 p.m. The Crimson defeated the Bulldogs last year and the two teams have not met since.
On Sunday, Yale begins the day with a match against Brown at 10 a.m. Though the two teams have yet to face off this year, at the last Ivy League Championships the Bulldogs managed a 26-1 victory.
Yale will have its last match-up against last year's champion, Columbia at noon
The Bulldogs will also have the opportunity to earn individual recognition. First-Team All-Ivy is awarded to the top three finishers in each weapon and Second Team All-Ivy is awarded to finishers in the fourth through sixth place. Rankings are determined based on the proportion of wins to losses throughout the entire tournament.
