Ending 2019 on High Note, Yale Beats Wagner 87-68

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – As the calendar turns to 2020, the Yale women's basketball team is hitting its stride. The Bulldogs finished off 2019 with an 87-68 win vs. Wagner at Lee Amphitheater Tuesday, notching their sixth win in seven games -- and fourth by double digits in that stretch.

Yale (9-3, 0-0 Ivy League) broke open a close game by outscoring Wagner (4-7, 0-0 NEC) 33-18 in the third quarter to take a commanding 74-54 lead. That included a stretch in which the Bulldogs outscored the Seahawks 21-6, with 12 of those points coming from senior guard Roxy Barahman. She finished with 16 points, hitting seven of her 10 shots.

Junior guard Ellen Margaret Andrews led the Bulldogs with 22 points and six rebounds, the fifth time since Nov. 26 that she has scored 20 or more points. That included 24 points in last Saturday's 66-63 win at UNC.

"That [UNC] game for her showed she could score and defend an ACC-level kid," said Allison Guth, Yale's Joel E. Smilow, Class of 1954 Head Coach of Women's Basketball. "Her confidence has been building."

The Bulldogs also had junior forward Alex Cade (12 points) and first-year guard Klara Astrom (11 points) finish in double digits. They had 17 assists, the third-most they have had in a game this season.

"That has been a focal point for us since the start of the season," said Guth. "Last year we did not assist the way we could. We want to shift defenses and get the great shot instead of the good shot."

A total of 11 players scored, highlighted by the first career three-pointer for first-year guard Jenna Clark.

"I'm so pumped for her," said Guth. "The lid finally came off."

Yale now turns its attention to the first game of 2020, with a quick turnaround -- the Bulldogs host Mercer Thursday at 7:00 p.m.

"This non-conference schedule is one of our tougher ones," said Guth, noting that the Bears are a couple years removed from a 30-3 season. "I'm pleased with the way we've played. We've got to get through one more."
