LOS ANGELES – The Yale women's basketball team is headed home from California on a roll. The Bulldogs capped their visit to the West Coast on Saturday with an 81-65 win vs. the host school in LMU's Thanksgiving Classic, marking their second straight double-digit win of the tournament. Yale has now won four of its last five, all on the road. Junior guard
Ellen Margaret Andrews led the Bulldogs in scoring Saturday, totaling 22 points and adding three steals.
Fresh off an 87-67 win vs. Fresno State Friday, Yale (5-2, 0-0 Ivy League) started strong on Saturday. The Bulldogs scored the first six points of the game -- all from sophomore forward
Camilla Emsbo, who was coming off a 26 point, 17 rebound effort Friday.
The Yale lead grew to 13 on a three-pointer from junior guard
Tori Andrew at the end of the first. LMU (2-6, 0-0 West Coast Conference) got no closer than eight in the second quarter, and the Bulldogs kept their lead in double digits throughout the third. It grew as large as 20 after a three-pointer by Andrew early in the fourth. After the Lions closed within 13 twice midway through the quarter, Yale ended the game with an 8-5 run.
The trip to California (which also included a game at No. 11 UCLA this past Tuesday) was a homecoming for three Bulldogs from the Golden State, and all of them got into Saturday's game. Senior guard
Roxy Barahman -- a native of nearby Calabasas -- had 16 points and three assists against LMU, earning a spot on the All-Tournament team. First year guard
Klara Astrom hit a pair of late free throws, and first year forward
Ayla Elam made her third appearance of the year.
Barahman, one of three Bulldogs (along with Andrews and Emsbo) who averaged 15.7 or more points per game on Yale's trip west, was appreciative of the chance to play near her hometown for the first time in her career with the Bulldogs.
"We loved playing California," Barahman said. "It was nice to have a lot of friends and family here. We learned to tough it out on the road, and learned to play with a lead."
Emsbo earned tournament MVP honors, totaling 41 points, 22 rebounds and four blocks in two games.
"It's just a matter of her having confidence and us getting her the ball," said Barahman.
The format of the Classic was such that all matchups were pre-determined and there was no "champion". Still, the Bulldogs wound up as the only team to win both games at the tournament. Fresno State beat Georgetown (who beat LMU Friday) in the earlier game Saturday.
Even without a trophy to show for it, the Bulldogs' performance at the Thanksgiving Classic provided a glimpse of what the team is capable of when playing at its best. In addition to winning each game by 16+ points, Yale totaled 30 assists and took care of details such as free throw shooting (21-for-25 on Saturday, including a 7-for-8 performance by Emsbo).
"We know we can compete with anyone," said Barahman. "It's a matter of having that same grit and toughness every game, no matter who we're playing. We came out with the same intensity. We have worked on playing a faceless opponent."
Yale hosts Providence at Lee Amphitheater Tuesday at 5:00 p.m.; that will be the second half of a game that was suspended at halftime earlier this season.
