BOSTON – The Bulldogs -- and one Californian in particular -- are headed west on a high note. Senior guard
Roxy Barahman poured in 29 points Saturday afternoon at Cabot Center to lead the Yale women's basketball team to a 78-63 win at Northeastern. The Bulldogs now head to Barahman's home state of California having swept their two-game trip through Massachusetts.
Yale (3-1, 0-0 Ivy League), coming off a 67-59 win Thursday at UMass Lowell, got off to another great start Saturday. The Bulldogs led by as many as eight in the first quarter, buoyed by three three-pointers from junior guard
Tori Andrew. She went on to finish with 17 points.
The Bulldogs also got an early boost from senior forward
Bronwyn Davies, who earned her first career start. Playing 20 miles from her hometown of Wayland, Davies had two rebounds, an assist and a steal in the first quarter alone.
"
Bronwyn Davies is one of our grittiest, toughest players," said
Allison Guth, Yale's Joel E. Smilow, Class of 1954 Head Coach of Women's Basketball. "No matter what is asked of her -- coming off the bench, working hard in practice -- she is selfless and committed to helping our team be great. She set the tone today. She deserved and earned every minute she got."
Northeastern (0-5, 0-0 CAA) closed to within two in the second quarter before the Bulldogs delivered a knockout blow before halftime. They reeled off 17 straight points -- including three-pointers from Andrew, Barahman and senior forward
Megan Gorman and a 6-for-6 performance at the free throw line -- to take a commanding 45-26 lead into halftime.
Northeastern got within 13 early in the fourth, but came no closer than that. Barahman scored eight points in a span of just over 90 seconds to help keep the Huskies at bay. In addition to her 29 points (four shy of her career high), she had six rebounds and four assists.
"I'm so happy for Roxy," said Guth. "She's worked so hard after coming back from an injury in the preseason. It was nice to see her in her groove offensively. She really took some ownership and controlled the tempo."
Sophomore forward
Camilla Emsbo led Yale's defensive effort with four blocks. She now has 14 blocks in the last three games.
"Camilla has been tremendous for us, especially on the defensive end altering opportunities," said Guth. "On the offensive end she's someone we are really comfortable getting the ball in to. She's making our defense better and playing confidently."
Emsbo grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, scoring 12 points for the double-double. Gorman also wound up in double digits with 10 points, adding six rebounds.
Yale plays at UCLA Tuesday at 7 p.m. Pacific Time.
