PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Bulldogs swept Brown on Saturday and Yale head coach Erin Appleman won her 300th career match. With the win, the Bulldogs remain in first place, improve to 7-1 in the Ivy League and 11-6 overall.
Yale has won 11 of 12 matches and remained atop the Ivy League standings to close out the weekend. The scores of today's match were 25-21, 26-24 and 25-22.
Maile Somera led the way on defense with 16 digs and has averaged five digs per set over the last two matches -- both Yale victories. Ellis DeJardin led a balanced attack with 10 kills, while team captain Izzy Simqu had nine.
Samantha Bray had seven kills, hit .455 and added four blocks. Frances Arnautou had 33 assists and 14 digs.
After Yale took the opening set, multiple Bulldogs came up with clutch plays. Yurika Boyd delivered a service ace to tie the set at 23-23, and Simqu smashed a kill to give Yale the lead.
Brown (10-7, 2-6 Ivy) tied the set at 24-24 before the Bulldogs captured the last two points. After a Brown hitting error, Kathyrn Attar put down set point on a kill set up by Arnautou.
In the third, Rebekah Nemeth broke a 12-12 tie with a kill and the Bulldogs never trailed again. With the set tied at 14-14, Yale rallied for three straight with kills from Nemeth and Simqu, followed by a block from Simqu.
Yale closed out the match with block assists from Nemeth and Bray.
Appleman improved her career mark at Yale to 300-115. In her first 16 years as Yale head coach, Appleman has nine Ivy League titles, seven NCAA Tournament appearances, four 20-plus win seasons and was the first coach in conference history to win a NCAA match -- a feat she has accomplished twice.
The Bulldogs return to action next weekend with matches at Dartmouth and Harvard.
