No. 9 Clarkson Edges Yale 2-1

Box Score

Leonoff Makes 34 Saves

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Looking to upset the defending national champions, the Yale women's ice hockey team grabbed a 1-0 lead late in the first period against No. 9 Clarkson at Ingalls Rink Saturday afternoon. But the Golden Knights responded with the game-tying goal early in the second, then got the game-winner early in the third for a 2-1 win.

Yale (2-2-0, 0-2-0 ECAC Hockey) bounced back from a 3-0 loss Friday night vs. St. Lawrence by peppering Clarkson netminder Shea Tiley with 18 shots in the first period. The Bulldogs finally hit paydirt on a 5-on-3 with less than a minute remaining, with senior forward Stephanie Mock scoring off assists by sophomore forward Phoebe Staenz and sophomore defenseman Taylor Marchin.

That was the fifth time in the first four games of the season that Yale has scored in the final minute of a period. But Clarkson (8-3-0, 2-0-0 ECAC Hockey) evened things with a power play goal at 5:53 of the second, as forward Shannon MacAulay scored her team-leading ninth goal of the year.

The Golden Knights wound up outshooting Yale 14-5 in the second, with senior goaltender Jaimie Leonoff making 13 saves to keep the game tied heading into the final frame.

Clarkson cashed in on another power play opportunity early in the third, taking a 2-1 lead on a goal by defenseman Savannah Harmon at 7:22. Yale got a power play five minutes later but was unable to convert. Leonoff, who finished with 34 saves, was pulled for an extra attacker in the final minute but the Bulldogs could not get the equalizer. Tiley finished with 32 saves.

Yale hosts No. 6 BU next Saturday.
