Box Score Seawolves Score Winning Goal With 32 Seconds Left In
Second OT
NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Three of Stony Brook's first six games had
gone to overtime, so when Wednesday's contest with Yale was tied
1-1 at the end of regulation, it figured the Seawolves might have
the advantage. That turned out to be the case. Debbie Aller scored
with just 32 seconds left in the second extra session to lift Stony
Brook to a 2-1 victory on a chilly and damp night at Reese Stadium.
The Bulldogs (3-2) had a 14-6 advantage in shots heading into
the second 10-minute overtime period, but the Seawolves had the
better of the play leading up to the winning goal and had the final
five shots of the game.
"I thought our energy level was good, but for some reason we are
deviating from our game plan," said Yale head coach Rudy Meredith.
"We have to get that corrected before the start of Ivy League
play."
After a scoreless first half, Yale grabbed the lead at 52:24
when Becky Brown scored her seventh goal of the season. Megan
Ashforth sent a terrific through ball to Brown, who got behind the
defense and beat Stony Brook goalkeeper Marisa Viola.
Taryn Schoenbeck, though, did some nifty dribbling to avoid Yale
defenders and left-footed a shot into the back of the net less than
11 minutes later to tie the score.
Yale had two good opportunities in the final 10 minutes of
regulation. Caitlin Collins sent a nice cross to Leslie Perez but
her hard shot from right in front went high. A few minutes later,
Collins headed Kristen Forster's long pass just wide.
Aller's game-winning goal came when Dana Adamkiewicz sent a free
kick toward the box. After a scramble in front, the ball came to
Aller, who drilled it in.
The Bulldogs finished with a 14-11 edge in shots and had six
corner kicks.
Viola made five saves for the Seawolves (1-5-1). Ayana Sumiyasu
stopped three shots for Yale.
The Bulldogs play their first road game of the season on Sunday
when they travel to UConn for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
