In their second straight come-from-behind victory, the Yale women's lacrosse team (7-3, 2-1 Ivy) defeated the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers (4-6) 10-8 Wednesday afternoon at Johnson Field. Senior Miles Whitman had another phenomenal performance, scoring six goals with one assist.
Just as in their game against Harvard on Saturday, the Bulldogs found themselves down two goals early into the first half, after Lindsay Rising and Jamie Farewell were able to get shots past Bulldog goaltender Lonnie Sarnell in the first four minutes of play.
Whitman rallied the Bulldog offense, scoring two quick unassisted goals in little over a minute, tying the score at 2-2 with 25:12 left to play in the first half.
A goal by Katie Batiuk with 24:07 left in the first half would give the Scarlet Knights the lead for the last time in the game. A characteristic five goal run by Yale put the Bulldogs back on top. Two more goals by Whitman, along with two goals by offensive powerhouse Sophie Melniker and one by Katherine Sargent put the Bulldogs up 7-4 at the half.
Rutgers played hard the second half, scoring four goals, but Yale's offense scored three insurance goals to keep the Bulldogs on top for the rest of the game. Whitman added two more goals off of free position shots and Sargent scored her second goal of the game off of a free position shot as well.
Yale was led defensively by Jennifer Kessel (1 caused turnover, 2 ground balls) and Lisa Reindl (1 caused turnover, 4 ground balls).
Sarnell played all 60 minutes in the cage and had nine saves.
Yale's next contest will be on the road Saturday at undefeated Princeton, unanimously ranked 1st in the nation by IWLCA, in a game beginning at 3:00 p.m. that will be televised on the College Sports Television Network.
