Box Score March 27, 2004
Final Stats
Miles Whitman scored four goals and notched two assists, but it wasn't enough for the No. 15 Elis as they fell to No. 11 Dartmouth 13-9 in Hanover, NH on Saturday afternoon. Sophie Melniker, last week's InsideLacrosse.com Honorable Mention Division I Player of the Week also added two goals and an assist. Katie Brownson and Jess Champion also had notable performances as each notched their first goals on the year.
After winning the first draw control, the Bulldogs (4-3, 1-1 Ivy) dominated the Big Green (3-2, 1-0 Ivy) in the first minutes of play, but were unable to score, largely due to the performance of Dartmouth goalkeeper Devon Wills, last year's Ivy League Rookie of the Year. Whitman got a free position shot past Wills 3:30 into play, scoring the game's first goal.
Dartmouth rallied three minutes later with a goal from Molly Jenkins, however Brownson's goal off of a Melniker feed put the Bulldogs back on top at 6:48.
Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, it would be the last time they held the lead. After Brownson's goal, Dartmouth went on a three goal run, stopped by an unassisted Whitman goal at 23:18.
Casey Hazel, Dartmouth's leader of the day with three goals, scored shortly afterward, but Whtiman and Melniker each got free position shots past Wills, tying the score at 5-5 with 1:23 left in the half. A free position shot by Lana Smith of Dartmouth put the Big Green up 6-5 to end the half.
Although the Bulldogs outshot the Big Green 30-27, Dartmouth opened the second half with another three goal run, putting them up 9-5. Katie Sargent broke the Dartmouth run 3:23 into the half, scoring a quick stick goal from off of a Whitman pass.
Whitman and Melniker also added second half goals for the Elis as did freshman Jess Champion, but Dartmouth managed to outlast the Bulldogs, who dropped the contest 13-9.
Yale Goaltender Lonnie Sarnell had 10 saves on the day, and also stopped three Dartmouth free position attempts.
Sarah Driscoll dominated Yale's transition game with seven ground balls. Kira Licata and Jennifer Kessel each had four ground balls and led Yale defensively, as did Meredith Mack, who had three caused turnovers.
Yale's next contest will be in New Haven at Johnson Field against the Fairfield Stags Wednesday, March 31 at 3:00 p.m.
